Progress Photos - Logan Mural Project Begins

(Logan Daily News) If you've driven past the Mulberry Street side of Saving Hardware, then you've probably seen the fruits of the first installment of the downtown mural project.

"The process went great," said mural artist Sherry Gargiulo. "I loved it and loved the people who introduced themselves. The people in this town are wonderful. I thought I was in Heaven."

Gargiulo began work on the Hocking Hills cave scene on July 12. She said she finished on Aug. 3 with 100 hours logged. The next day, on Aug. 4, Gargiulo signed the mural. During the process, Gargiulo said she met several interesting people, including some artists. Another man even brought flowers to Gargiulo. Visitors came from Chillicothe to see the artist in action, as well.

"A lot of people brought me water," said Gargiulo. "One girl hopped out of the car and threw me a water. A lot of people brought me sodas too. You don't get that in Columbus."

Sherry has kept busy after completing the first mural. She recently completed a mural behind the Logan Daily News office. Gargiulo explained that it was a winter scene with a deer, blue jay, and a Logan Daily newspaper in the snow. Tonight, a public meeting is being held at 6:30 p.m. at the Logan-Hocking Library meeting room. The chamber is beginning to plan for a second mural in downtown Logan, said Doug Wells, chairman of the mural committee. This is a brainstorming session for possible ideas for a location and theme, said Wells. Wells said next month, the mural committee will meet to finalize the location and idea after the recommendations at the brainstorming session.

"We want to be set up for spring," said Wells. "We don't want to lose momentum."

Wells said that the committee would like several more muralsin the downtown area.

"Ultimately, we want to increase foot traffic downtown," said Wells.

A dedication ceremony is being planned for the first mural, said Wells. A plaque will be placed next to the mural with sponsors who donated $250 or more to the mural project. Donations are still being accepted for sponsors. A "one-hour" sponsorship costs $25. All money collected goes directly toward the cost of the mural. Tax-deductible contributions can be made to the Logan-Hocking Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Please call the chamber office at 385-6836 with any questions. Suggestions can also be given to the chamber office if you can't attend the meeting.
